Training on bamboo tissue culture
A 5 days hands-on training (05- 09 August 2019) on bamboo tissue culture for 7 technicians from Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda was conducted at Grow more Biotech Ltd, India. The training content include (a) collection of mother tissue; (b) initiation of culture from ex-plant; (c) rooting of culture; (d) media preparation; (e) multiplication of culture; (f) plant weaning, primary hardening in poly house; (g) secondary hardening in shade net; (h) lab maintenance, plant coding system, and clean area entry protocol.

Bamboo Brought Under Sustainable Management
Bamboo forests and farms in Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda are not sustainably management owing to the lack of technical skills. The project aimed to bring 1500 hectares under sustainable management. During Year 2 of the project, a total of 735 hectares of bamboo are brought under sustainable harvesting and management regime. During Year 3, a total of 467.65 hectares of bamboo forests and farms brought under sustainable management regime benefiting 1,289 smallholders.

Sustainable management of bamboo forests and farms are planned during the year 2 of the project. The project collaborated with private sector players in Ethiopia to identify the locations from where the bamboo are sourced and the smallholder farms are brought under sustainable management. In Kenya, the project collaborated with Green Pot Enterprises to undertake sustainable management in small holder farms. In Uganda, the project collaborated with National Forestry Authority to sustainably managed a 300 hectare of degraded bamboo forest in Echuya Central Forestry Reserve.
The activities are accomplished and closed by the end of Dec 2019

Six awareness workshops for banks and financial institution; six stakeholder workshop for product policy development: at least two product policy published; 21 awareness events; six video and 12 radio programmes; 20000 participants in awareness events.
The programme organized 9 awareness events, achieving 42 percent of the overall indicators. Moreover, the programmeorganised three radio talk shows and facilitated the broadcasting of the video programme on bamboo. The links and /or the details of the video and radio programme is as shown below:

The programme developed the following IEC materials in local languages for public awareness building to encourage the investment in bamboo sector in the programme beneficiary countries.
2 awareness and sensetisation workshop organised leading bankers, micro-finance institutions, and entrepreneurs in Kenya and Uganda.11 awareness events organised to reach 5226 participants belong to researchers, media persons , consumers, policy makers and farmers. Creating wide level awareness on bamboo local media platform used on talk shows.1 video show and 3 radio programme organised. Overall, the programme organised 21 awareness events for 7873 participants; 2 bankers workshop and 2 video talks and 3 radio talks.
One awareness and sensitisation workshop organised for leading bankers, micro finance institutions, and entrepreneurs in Kenya as follow-up initiatives financial literacy programme started for bamboo growers and entrepreneurs.

Baseline and M&E framework established; online monitoring system established; 50 participatory stewards.
The baseline study and M&E framework was completed and developed a cluster development report. The programme identified 22 bamboo clusters (Ethiopia6, Kenya8, and Uganda8) and mobilised 10675 households (Ethiopia3650, Kenya3475, and Uganda:3550) for interventions. The development of online geographical project monitoring and evaluation system is in progress and is expected to be completed by mid of 2021. The programmedeployed 12 participatory stewards(PS) in different clusters for extension support and community mobilization and field data collection.
14 participatory stewards were deployed in the different clusters to reach the community. 2 capacity building trainings were organised for the participatory stewards to enhance their capacity and build knowledge on bamboo policy and diversified products to establish enterprises.

Markets and trade fairs organised
Local and international trade fairs, workshops and market infrastructures establishment
Six local market infrastructure established; 2 bamboo products included in public procurement system; three international and nine domestic trade fairs; three linkages with government run market outlet chain.
The programme provided support in establishing three market infrastructures one each in three beneficiary countries. In Ethiopia, the local market infrastructure is established in ETTE premises in Haya. In Kenya, the local market infrastructure is established at Busia and in Uganda, the local market infrastructure is located at Mgahinga and Mulamba Kisoro District. The market infrastructures are well equipped with bamboo cross cutter, micro shed (150 square feet) for storing and graded bamboo culm for different utility.
The programme has also supported theorganisationand/or participation in three local exhibitions. In Ethiopia an exhibition was organised in partnership with the Federal Small and Medium Manufacturing Industries Promotion Authority(FeSMMIPA) where 15 bamboo entrepreneurs participated. In Kenya, an exhibition was organisedatButula, Busia, in collaboration with KEFRI and Kenya Bamboo Association(KBA) alongside celebration of on World Bamboo Day where 50 bamboo entrepreneurs and bamboo farmers participated. Uganda exhibition was organised on World Bamboo Day at Buganda Kingdom where 35 entrepreneurs participated.
2 bamboo depo were supported with additional facilities in Ethiopia and Kenya.2 multi-stakeholder workshop-organised, 67 participants attended to discuss the possibility to allocate budget for bamboo-based activities in the annual work plan of the line departments and incorporate bamboo products in the government procurement system. 2 multi-stakeholders meeting organised for product policy in Ethiopia and Kenya.
2 bamboo depo were supported with additional facilities in Ethiopia and Kenya. One multi-stakeholders meeting organised for product policy in Kenya, as follow-up action- most potential products and enterprises have been identified to establish supply chain with public procurement system. In Ethiopia 2 sales outlet supported and linkages with small bamboo enterprises.

One programme level steering committee established; one gender analysis report; three steering committee meetings; three audit reports; one mid-term and one final evaluation report.
A steering committee comprising of members from all the beneficiary countries (Ethiopia,Kenya and Uganda), and knowledge provider (China and the Netherlands) was established during the beginning of the programme. The steering committee meets once a year to deliberate on the achievements, work plan and budget of the programme. Due to Covid-19 pandemic and international travel restrictions physical meeting could not be possible to organise.A virtual meeting (Microsoft Teams) was organised on 15 – 16 October 2020.The gender analysis study was completed.
The gender mainstreaming study completed, based on the recommendation a gender strategy has been developed inline with the programme activities and linkages with line departments to address the issues and gender mainstreaming in bamboo sector.
One programme steering committee formed , two virtual meetings were organised and the 3rd steering committee will be held in January in Uganda on hybrid mode, physical participation for African members and virtual participation for the members from the Netherlands and China.
