    <narrative xml:lang="en">Strengthening the Brazilian health system to better address racial health inequities</narrative>
  </title>
  <description type="1">
    <narrative xml:lang="en">Racial/ethnic health inequalities are large, unjust, preventable, and remediable. Health systems can exacerbate these inequalities by reflecting discrimination in wider society or by actively addressing these inequalities. Specific actions are needed to strengthen policies, financing, and clinical services to reduce racial health inequalities. This project will produce evidence on different health system factors and policies that exacerbate or reduce racial health inequalities in Brazil. It specifically aims to: 1) comprehensively measure racial health inequalities across Brazil, including changes over time and between geographical areas; 2) understand and quantify health system factors (e.g. policies, financing, health professionals, and discrimination) which drive these inequalities; 3) evaluate the impact of key national policies on racial health inequalities; 4) produce indicators for measuring racial health inequalities and a visual online dashboard; 5) involve and engage communities, politicians, civil society, and administrators in the research process; and 6) raise awareness and build capacity with online training courses, social media, and seminars.This work will be carried out in Brazil by the Institute of Health Policy Studies (IEPS) in Sao Paulo in collaboration with Imperial College London in the UK. Brazil is a key setting for this research as it has large health inequalities across racial groups and there are high-quality healthcare datasets. There are also important policies related to the health of the Black population that need evaluating, and there are effective civil society movements and engaged policymakers requesting evidence to inform their agendas. Policymakers and politicians, Black movement groups, and civil society informed this project and will join the research team to shape the research priorities, increase their knowledge of research, foster uptake of results, and inform new policies. Outputs include academic papers, technical and policy briefs, online data visualisations, newspaper articles, social media content, targeted discussions with policymakers, and workshops. This strategy aims to equip the Brazilian health system to better tackle racial health inequalities, build capacity of administrators, and empower communities to lead and campaign for change.</narrative>
