INSFEED 2:Insect feed for poultry and fish production in Sub-Saharan Africa.
In many African countries, poultry and fish industries are among the fastest growing agri-businesses. However, the use of expensive inputs such as fish and plants as feed ingredients is threatening the survival of producers. The present initiative proposes to improve income generation, food and nutritional security in Kenya and Uganda by developing insect-based feeds for sustainable, safe and cost-effective poultry and fish production. The major research thrust will include identification of suitable insect species, assessing the potential market and nutritional attributes of the products, and development and adaptation of cost-effective insect rearing, harvesting, and post-harvest techniques for smallholder producers. It will also establish the risk factors associated with the insect-based feeds along the food chain and their mitigation strategies as well as conduct research to inform policies for promotion of safe, sustainable and cost-effective use of insect in the feed sector.

A crowd sourcing approach to large scale monitoring of pests
This program aims to utilise a community-based crowdsourcing approach to crop protection of smallholder farms in low-resource settings by developing a simple software platform for basic feature phones to monitor pest incidence. Human-based monitoring of crops is the most accurate way to identify pests, but there are too few public monitoring agents in low-resource settings, leaving the majority of farms unprotected. Engaging the smallholder farmers to monitor their own crops is a promising solution, but most of them lack sophisticated equipment like smart phones and have low technical knowledge, so simpler solutions are needed. Therefore, they will adapt commercially-available software that collates and analyzes pest incidence data for basic feature phones and, together with smallholder farmers, design simple interfaces for SMS communication.

Understanding tick-borne zoonotic disease epidemiology within the nomadic pastoral systems in Isiolo, Tana river, West Pokot and Garissa counties of Kenya
This program aims at investigating the role of ticks in the circulation of arboviruses and non-zoonotic pathogens of emergent public health importance along livestock migratory routes in Kenya. This knowledge is important because of the recent outbreaks of arboviruses in these areas. Furthermore, there is limited capacity to diagnose these infections in Kenya as many cases often go undetected and/or mistaken for common parasitic or bacterial diseases due to the nonspecific nature of their clinical manifestation. The output from this work will provide information on the epidemiology and ecology of these tick-borne zoonotic diseases for public health use.

Evaluating the feasibility and impact on malaria transmission of community-based winter larviciding or house screening as additional vector control interventions in southern African countries committed to malaria elimination
This program aims to test the overall hypothesis of the icipe-led research that screening of houses or dry-season (winter) larviciding when added to existing vector control interventions such as LLINs (Long-lasting insecticidal nets) and IRS (indoor residual spraying (IRS)) will constitute a more effective strategy for malaria elimination compared to situations where only the latter two methods are used.

Genome - wide association studies to map genetic variation underlying mosquito susceptibility to human malaria
Based on the fact that some mosquitoes are better malaria transmitters than others, this project aims to investigate the differences in the genetic make-up of these mosquitoes using a technology that intimately examines the mosquito genome. This comparison and follow-up tests will identify genes that are associated with mosquito capacity to carry the most deadly of the human malarias. Discovering the mosquito genes that have a big impact on malaria transmission is an essential step towards the promising strategy of developing drugs and vaccines that target the parasite while it is in the mosquito.

Integrated pest management strategy to counter the threat of invasive fall armyworm to food security in Eastern Africa (FAW-IPM)
This FAW IPM Guide is designed for use by professionals in plant protection organizations, extension agencies, research institutions, and Governments, whose primary focus is smallholder farmers and the seed systems that support them. The FAW IPM Guide is meant to provide an important foundation for the emergence of harmonized FAW pest management protocols that will continue to be informed by research. The guide is also expected to serve as the basis for a series of cascading technical knowledge dissemination materials and social and behavioral change communications that will specifically target the needs of the smallholder farmers in Africa.

End of the Road for the illegal Bushmeat trade in East Africa: Establishing Transboundary Surveillance by High Resolution Melting Analysis of vertebrate Molecular Barcodes
This project is adapting this unique vertebrate DNA species identification approach to accelerate forensic sequence evidence pipelines required for the prosecution of wildlife/bushmeat traders and facilitate large-scale surveillance of potential wildlife products. We will also monitor changes in vector blood-feeding patterns before and after wildlife translocations, to identify their potential impacts on disease transmission.
