Testing Participatory Rangeland Management in Bale District
Farm Africa will thoroughly test and develop an effective approach to improving rangeland resource management, thus enhancing pastoral livelihoods and pastoralists’ resilience. The project comprises a one-year pilot phase in one pastoralist location, followed by a five-year programme to roll the approach out to other locations in Bale and three other pastoralist regions for further testing, development and refining. The objectives of the initial pilot project are to develop and test Participatory Rangeland Management (PRM) as a land use planning and management system in Ethiopia’s lowlands; improve the productive capacity of rangelands in one district of Bale Zone, Oromiya; enhance community/state and community/investor engagement in managing rangelands in the target district; and document the approach for use in scaling out, through the production of a PRM implementation manual.

BRACED (Building Resilience & Adaptation to Climate Extremes & Disasters)
This project will reduce vulnerability amongst pastoralist, agropastoralist and peri-urban populations in lowland areas of Ethiopia by promoting more resilient social and economic systems that are better able to adapt to increasing climate-related shocks. Through modelling and partnership it will enhance institutional knowledge and learning within the public and private sector, of how ‘green’ growth approaches can support strengthened climate resilience. Engagement with public and private sector enterprise will lead to examples of successful market-based approaches for resilience-building, which will in turn inform development policy, planning and practice, as well as enabling environment for business in the lowlands.;
