CHOICE for Youth and Sexuality
Get Up Speak Out (GUSO)
Get Up Speak Out alliance (GUSO): This alliance consists of Rutgers, dance4life, Simavi, International Planned Parenthood Federation,STOP AIDS NOW!, CHOICE for Youth and Sexuality, in a partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The GUSO programme addresses the following problem; Young people do not claim their sexual rights and their right to participation because of restrictions at community, societal, institutional and political levels. This hinders their access to comprehensive SRHR education and services that match their needs, and ability to make their own informed SRHR decisions. To address this problem the GUSO programme uses a multicomponent approach in which it links (i) provision of sexuality education and information, (ii) provision of quality, youth-friendly SRH services and (iii) building support for youth SRHR, by addressing socio-cultural and political barriers in terms of practices, norms and policies. CHOICE aims to empower young people to increasingly voice their rights, meaningfully involve young people in all stages of organizations and program, strengthen the capacity of youth-led organizations to become sustainable, and encourage, capacitate and empower youth advocates to advocate for their sexual and reproductive rights at local, national and international level.
The long-term objectice of GUSO is: All young people, especially girls and young women, are empowered to realise their SRHR in societies that are positive towards young people’s sexuality. The GUSO Theory of Change consists of 5 Interrelated outcomes ot reach the long-term objective: 1. Strengthened and sustainable alliances 2. Empowered young people voice their rights 3. Increased use of SRHR information and education 4. Increased use of youth-friendly SRHR services 5. Improved socio-cultural and legal environment
Young people aged (10-24) are both the actors and beneficiaries of the GUSO programme

CHOICE for Youth and Sexuality
Get Up Speak Out (GUSO) - Malawi
Get Up Speak Out alliance (GUSO): This alliance consists of Rutgers, dance4life, Simavi, International Planned Parenthood Federation,STOP AIDS NOW!, and CHOICE. The goal of this alliance is that all young people, especially girls and young women, are empowered to realise their sexual and reproductive health and rights in societies that are positive towards young people’s sexuality. The GUSO programme links (i) provision of sexuality education and information, (ii) provision of quality, youth-friendly SRH services and (iii) building support for youth SRHR, by addressing socio-cultural and political barriers in terms of practices, norms and policies.

CHOICE for Youth and Sexuality
Yes I Do
Millions of adolescent girls all over the world are facing a limited future because of early marriage (EM), teenage pregnancies and female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C). With this project, by changing the attitude of community members and other key persons and informing adolescent girls and boys, adolescents will be empowered to stand up for their sexual reproductive health and rights (SRHR). Through education, (economic) empowerment and meaningful youth participation, supported by the relevant legislation and policies, the project will give adolescents alternatives beyond EM, teenage pregnancies and FGM/C.
Through this alliance CHOICE works in 6 countries: Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and Indonesia. In the YID-alliance CHOICE is the lead organisation on meaningful engagement and empowerment of young people.
adolescents and young people (10-24)
Deep-rooted norms and expectations of girls and boys makes families and communities feel the need to control the sexuality of girls by marrying them off and forcing them to undergo FGM/C. Gender inequality is putting girls in a subordinate position with regard to boys and men in (sexual) relationships. For example, girls cannot refuse to have unprotected sex and this is resulting in a high level of teenage pregnancies. Girls and boys lack a voice, as well as the support to break through these norms and practices. The means and structures available for adolescents to organise themselves and claim their rights are limited and they have little access to adolescent-friendly and good quality SRHR information and services. There are close links between EM, FGM/C and teenage pregnancies and girls’ lack of education. Indeed, girls’ access to education is very restricted, which makes it difficult for them to find jobs later. It also hampers their economic independence. Legislation to outlaw FGM/C is either inadequate or is being poorly implemented.

CHOICE for Youth and Sexuality
Right Here Right Now
Right Here Right Now (RHRN) is a strategic partnership between Rutgers Netherlands, Asian-Pacific Resource and Research Centre of Women (ARROW), CHOICE for Youth and Sexuality, dance4life, Hivos, International Planned Parenthood Federation Africa Region (IPPF AR), Latin American and Caribbean Women’s Health Network (LACWHN) and the Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs. The partnership addresses the limited protection and respect and the hindered fulfillment of the Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) of young people in 10 countries and one sub-region, in low- and middle-income countries in Africa (Kenya, Senegal, Uganda, Zimbabwe), Asia (Bangladesh, Indonesia, Nepal, Pakistan), and Latin America (Bolivia, Honduras) and the Caribbean, with a focus on: freedom from stigma, discrimination and violence, access to comprehensive youth-friendly services and to comprehensive information regarding young people’s SRHR, and space for young people’s voices and meaningful participation. CHOICE aims to ensure the meaningful participation of young people throughout the RHRN programme at all levels and in all phases. In addition to doing our own advocacy, CHOICE will also encourage, capacitate and empower youth advocates at the national and international level, ensuring that they can create a critical mass to advocate for and voice their SRHR.
The long-term objective of RHRN is that young people, in all their diversity, acquire full and uninterrupted access to comprehensive sexuality education, and youth-friendly sexual and reproductive health services, including safe abortion. This objective will be achieved through the increased capacity of civil society, including young people and youth-led organizations, to conduct concerted advocacy for a progressive and inclusive SRHR agenda at the (sub)national, regional, and international level. In addition, RHRN will advocate for and hold governments accountable to their adoption of progressive and inclusive policies (and budgets thereof) for the implementation of comprehensive sexuality education and youth-friendly SRH services, including safe abortion.
The target group is young people from age 10 - 24. Young people are both the actors and beneficiaries of the programme.

Yes I Do - Ethiopia
The goal of YID programme is for adolescent girls to decide if, when and whom to marry and if, when and with whom to have children with, and are protected from FGM/C. The alliance uses multiple strategies to reach this desired impact, namely: social mobilization, meaningful engagement and empowerment of young people; improved SRH information and services; improved access to education and economic opportunities and dialogues

A community-based cluster sample survey was administered at the household level among young girls and boys aged 15-24 in two intervention areas (Woredas: Bahirdar Zuirya and Qewete in Amhara Region). The survey included question about child marriage. We obtained a sample size of 1600 using a standard formula- taking into account possible ?design effects? because of the clustered sampling- we multiplied the required sample by 1.5 and had a ratio of 75% female respondents and 25% male respondents. A total of 1602 questionnaires were administered- which was the planned target.

(qualitative) Changes observed relative to baseline in girls and boys between 15 and 24 years old who feel they can advocate for themselves
Semi-structured in-depth interviews with girls aged between 15-19 and 20-24 years and boys aged between 15-19 and 20-24 years. And focus group discussions with groups of girls aged between 15-19 and 20-24 years and groups of boys aged between 15-19 and 20-24 years
Scale 0=no 1=few 2=some 3=most 4=all. Girls and boys seem to have little space to advocate for themselves. Especially those not living in larger towns and cities.
Some girls have increasing access to income generating activities which enable them to postpone age at first marriage negotiate whom and when to marry. For most young people it is difficult to talk about sexuality themes with parents or elders.

There seems to be general support for gender equality. Policy makers at district level express their motivation to support gender equality. The specific perceptions around gender equality vary. The study has limited evidence on the exact actions and strategies to support gender equality and rights.

Girls and boys seem to have some capacity to advocate for themselves especially through the Champions of Change programme and other youth clubs they have been able to express themselves and learn about their rights. However the young people do not feel free to discuss or express themselves especially on sensitive issues as is indicated by the survey.

A community-based cluster sample survey was administered at the household level among young girls and boys aged 15-24 in the intervention areas (Chadiza&Petauke) and control area (Katete). The survey included question about child marriage. We obtained a sample size of 1434 using a standard formula- taking into account possible design effects because of the clustered sampling- we multiplied the required sample by 1.5 and had a ratio of 75% female respondents and 25% male respondents. A total of 1455 questionnaires were administered.

There are some observed changes to young people's agency and capacity to speak out. Some participants spoke about improvements in intergenerational communication. Others said it was still difficult to discuss issues with adults. A conservative culture remains and young peoples' self-expression is mostly shaped by their outward appearance and hardly by contributing in for example community meetings which seems to limit self-expresions and agency.

Due to COVID-19 and the related school closure in September 2020. it was not possible to use the same sampling framework for the end-line survey as for 2016 baseline study in Mogovolas (household sample n=715) and the 2017 Nampula and Rapale study (school-based sample n=943). The end-line survey therefore targeted young people (15-24 years. both female and male) involved in the Champions of Change activities in all three districts: Mogovolas (n=55). Nampula (n=35) and Rapale (n=74). The different sampling frame used for the end-line as result of COVID-19. makes comparison with the previous studies not possible and therefore. only the qualitative indicators have received a value in the IATI reporting. Some youth indicated to have the capacity to advocate for themselves. However very few youth participate in decision-making in their communities. Several youth groups and or clubs exist. Youth in these groups advocate against child marriage and teenage pregnancies through lectures in the communities and schools. Peer to peer groups formed under projects such Yes I Do and geração Bizz were said to play an important role in facilitating the discussing about such topics. This shows some improvement as compared to the baseline.

Girls and boys seem to have little capacity to advocate for themselves in Nametil. Youth engagement in general is limited as young people are rarely invited in community activities organized by adults and intergenerational communication is generally poor. However there are a number of active youth activists who conduct awareness raising activities such as lectures in the SAAJ and school or theater activies. There were more of these activist in the past in Nametil but under the YIDA programme a small number have continued. Most young people address their concerns and SRHR issues between peers and some refer to the youth activists and youth/school clubs as a space to participate and communicate.

CHOICE for Youth and Sexuality
Yes I Do - Kenya
The goal of YID programme is for adolescent girls to decide if, when and whom to marry and if, when and with whom to have children with, and are protected from FGM/C. The alliance uses multiple strategies to reach this desired impact, namely: social mobilization, meaningful engagement and empowerment of young people; improved SRH information and services; improved access to education and economic opportunities and dialogues

(qualitative) Changes observed relative to baseline in girls and boys between 15 and 24 years old who feel they can advocate for themselves
Semi-structured in-depth interviews with girls aged between 15-19 and 20-24 years and boys aged between 15-19 and 20-24 years. And focus group discussions with groups of girls aged between 15-19 and 20-24 years and groups of boys aged between 15-19 and 20-24 years
Scale: 0=no 1=few 2=some 3=most 4=all
Mainly girls seem to have little capacity and space to advocate for themselves. Boys are more accepted to advocate for themselves.
Most girls and boys admit that they have very little space to advocate for their issues especially issues that go against the culture or are sensitive. Within the household boys are capable to talk directly with their father but girls mainly have to communicate via their mother with the father who is the main decision maker in the household. Boys and girls feel more safe to discuss sensitive issues with their teachers or at church fora. young people are not very much organised to join forces to advocate for their issues. However girls or boys with higher education are more respected and can provide a bit more input.

CHOICE for Youth and Sexuality
Youth Ambassador SRHR
The themes are:
1) Meaningful youth participation (MYP) within the policies of the Ministry.
2) Sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), including in conflict, humanitarian and refugee
settings, and SRH services for survivors.
Sub-themes:
a. Recognition, accountability and prevention.
b. Access to youth friendly SRH services for survivors of SGBV.
c. Celebration of and commitment to UNSCR 1325, with its 20-year anniversary in 2020.
Netherlands - Ministry of Foreign Affairs
In a time where global public health is the world’s main concern, it is even more evident that SRHR,
gender equality and bodily autonomy are essential human rights and need to be treated as such.
Youth, minorities and displaced persons most often have the least access to fulfilling their SRH,
through inaccessible services, education, or lack of decent work. In response to the visible
regressive trend, MoFA and YASRHR emphasize the necessity of continued promotion of SRHR,
gender equality and bodily autonomy.

CHOICE for Youth and Sexuality
Power To You(th)
The Power to You(th) partnership is a Dutch ministry funded programme, that unites Amref Flying Doctors, Rutgers and Sonke Gender Justice, along with technical partners Royal Tropical Institute and CHOICE for Youth and Sexuality. Its overall objective is to contribute to adolescent girls and young women from underserved communities being meaningfully included in all decision-making, particularly focusing on harmful practices, sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) and unintended pregnancies. The programme is implemented in seven countries: Ethiopia, Ghana, Indonesia, Kenya, Malawi, Senegal and Uganda, with coordination support and advocacy activities conducted in the Netherlands and globally. As a technical partner, CHOICE’s mandate is to support youth-led organisations (YLOs) and ensure meaningful youth participation (MYP) throughout the programme.

Right Here, Right Now 2
Right Here Right Now 2 (RHRN2) builds on the successes of its predecessor Right Here Right Now (2016-2020) funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The new partnership, RHRN2 (2021-2025) consists of consortium partners Rutgers (lead), AMPF, ARROW, CHOICE for Youth and Sexuality, RHU, and RNW Media, and technical partners Dance4Life and IPPF AR.
The strategic objective of RHRN2 is for young people in all their diversity to enjoy their sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) in gender-just societies. By placing young people at the forefront of the partnership, RHRN2 seeks:
• to increase public support for SRHR;
• to improve policies and laws; and
• to strengthen civil society.
CHOICE is the youth-led partner in the consortium of the RHRN2 partnership and focuses on meaningful youth participation in decision-making and youth-led advocacy on youth's SRHR and bodily autonomy.
