ARTICLE 19’s protection work, based around three strategic pillars, seeks to protect people’s ability to exercise their right to freedom of expression : 1. Freedom of expression and vulnerable groups: combating “hate speech” and censorship targeted at marginalised and disadvantaged groups in a framework that respects fundamental human rights 2. Protection of Civic Space and collective expression: protecting human rights in the context of peaceful protest, assembly and public participation, including protection of civic space, both online and offline 3. Security and impunity: protection of individuals, including journalists, human rights defenders and others who are attacked for speaking out.

The project will promote the right to information by sharing ARTICLE 19’s expertise though trainings, research and reporting, intervention in policy debates, providing assistance and expertise in important legal cases, and new initiatives to further elaborate and improve international standards in the right to information. The work will focus on promoting the adoption by national and international bodies of international standards and best practices and education of civil society, government officials and others of these standards. The project will allow for flexible funding to create positive opportunities to promote the right to information at the national and international level, and to respond with strategic and timely interventions to opportunities for the promotion of RTI at national, regional or international level.
