The project will support drought affected communities to: • access essential food support by improving the immediate food security of vulnerable households and school feeding. • access potable water by water- point’s rehabilitation and maintenance, de-silting of pans, provision of storage tanks and trucking. ActionAid will also build the capacity of women affected by the drought to develop community based protection plans. Spaces will be created to actively involve them in the design and implementation of women led local level protection responses, provide psychosocial counselling to women affected by GBV, and provide support and linkages to referral mechanisms and institutions including medical and legal support. Safe spaces in schools through the girls’ forums and at food and water distribution points for women will be utilized. Dignity kits to affected women and girls will be provided. The project will also strengthen accountability in the drought response. ActionAid realise the important role that participation and inclusion, information sharing, complaints and resolution mechanism and holding others to account plays in promoting accountability in delivery of emergency response.

DEC Emergency Appeal for People Fleeing Myanmar
The project will focus on • protecting women and adolescent girls • providing WASH (water) infrastructure and ensuring the management of WASH infrastructure • addressing other needs such as providing a monthly ration of rice husk fuel to targeted households for the following reasons: women and children are at risk from threats such as GBV while they collect fuel wood, particularly as they now need to range further for collection; wood as a fuel produces lots of smoke within shelters and this has health implications i.e. rice husk is a cleaner fuel type; and providing fuel reduces the extent to which environmental degradation occurs.

GATE-GEC Education
GATE-GEC programme is a four-year programme, starting in April 2017. It aims to help marginalised girls and children (girls and boys) with disabilities in six districts of Sierra Leone (Kono, Kenema, Port Loko, Karene, Moyamba and Kailahun) to reach their learning potential and to transition through primary school, into junior secondary school and beyond. The programme was designed to continue and to develop interventions for marginalised children supported in the original GEC programme which commenced in March 2013. These include bursaries and study groups for pupils, training and support of female learning assistants and student teachers, providing support for children with disabilities through community-based rehabilitation volunteers (CBRVs), provision of assistive devices, and setting up model schools.

Access to education and transforming the lives of women and children
Through this project, we strengthen our engagement with the communities of Gola, Qasha, Muya Kela and Dakin. An important part of our work in Semen Bench will involve reaching out to and engaging with the Menja community, a small group that live apart from the larger community and experience social, economic, and political marginalisation. There are currently 4,474 children enrolled in schools in Gola, Qasha, Muya Kela and Dakin, and over the course of three years we will work to support these children to access quality education in a safe, girl-friendly environment. We will also work to support women in Semen Bench to improve their livelihoods and combat gender-based violence and harmful traditional practices.

Winning with women and girls 2020/21
ActionAid UK has a partnership with People's Postcode Lottery and benefits directly from lottery draws assigned within a calendar year. This will be the final year in which ActionAid UK benefits from these draws, as PPL's funding model changes in 2021. In 2020/21, funds have been assigned to girl-led research and the development of a toolkit for working with adolescent girls. This will bring together learnings from previous PPL-funded projects about what works in supporting adolescent girls, and identify good practices as well as advocacy objectives for this area. AA Zimbabwe has also received funding for continuation of a project amplifying girls' voices, and will integrate a new community-based methodology, SASA! Together, to address VAWG. Innovative humanitarian projects will also receive funding across the ActionAid federation. Part of the funds also go to AAUK for both internal strategic projects and to cover the grant management support provided to implementing countries.

Towards Resilient Communities with Health, Equality and Safety for all
Building on the achievements of the PPL-funded 'Empowered Adolescent Girls for Improved Quality of Life' project, TORCHES will continue to use the Tuseme ('let us speak out') methodology in schools, a participatory theatre-based approach which aims to create safe spaces for girls and boys to take action for gender equality and transform their school environment. Alongside this, the SASA! Together approach will be used to combat VAWG, working at all levels of the community to reduce violence against women and girls. The project will also focus on disability inclusion, and on work with service providers to ensure that survivors of violence can access the support that they need. ActionAid Zimbabwe will be working with the Forum for African Women Educationalists, Zimbabwe Chapter (FAWEZI), the Family AIDS Caring Trust (FACT), and Leonard Cheshire Disability Zimbabwe (LCDZ) to implement this programme.

Empowering communities to challenge FGM and prevent COVID-19 in Gabiley
This project aims to replicate the successful approaches of FGM prevention projects previously supported by the Adelman Foundation, and combine COVID-19 prevention messaging to ensure the wide range of community representatives involved in challenging FGM are also able to share lifesaving information on COVID-19.
The COVID-19 prevention activities will reach 16,000 households, directly benefitting approximately 96,000 people. By supporting Somaliland’s efforts to reduce the spread and impact of COVID-19, we hope to strengthen our FGM programme. The FGM component of this project will directly benefit 1,208 people living in rural communities of Gabiley District, indirectly benefitting tens of thousands more through the sharing of information and influencing up to 20,000 people through media programmes.

Strengthening access to quality education for children in Koh Kong
In Koh Kong, a lack of quality teaching and poor school infrastructure are significant factors that impact children’s ability to enjoy good quality public education. Building on successes from other projects funded by Guy’s Trust across Cambodia, this project will help more than 105 children to access quality education through improved facilities and a curriculum that is relevant to them and the skills they need for the future.

Construction of a child protection centre in Mbuyi Mayi and Evaluation
As part of activities to respond to the humanitarian crises in Mbuyi Mayi, AA DRC commenced the construction of a child protection centre to cater for the needs of unaccompanied children who were displaced as a result of the conflict. Part of the funds will be used to complete the facility which will be handed over to the community after its completion. As part of Accountability Learning and Planning Systems, AA DRC is required to conduct a review of programmes and interventions to ensure tracking of ongoing learning and critical reflection on changes that took place through engagement with people living in poverty and stakeholders are tracked. Part of the funds will be used to review AA DRC’s achievements and lessons learnt in terms of humanitarian work in order to map out new strategies for continuous action. The rest of the funds will be used to support the country programme in meeting staff costs.

Improving access to quality education for children in Ghana
Basic education is a fundamental right for every child of school going age, but this is not the case for some children in parts of Ghana. Children, especially girls, in some rural areas face the daunting task of walking for miles to access education due to either a lack of school buildings in their communities or deplorable conditions of existing school buildings which are unsafe for teaching and learning. To address this issue, ActionAid is piloting a pioneering new model of schools that meets the needs of children currently facing long commutes to school, and pays particular attention to the factors causing girls to drop out of education. In line with this model, we will construct two primary schools and one kindgergarten in three different areas of great need in Ghana, enabling 470 children – particularly girls - to access education and have a chance of a brighter future.

TORCHES (Towards Resilient Communities with Health, Equality and Safety for all) Phase II
AA Zim is continuing to deliver programming which encourages the questioning of power imbalances and acceptance of violence against women and girls (VAWG). Activities are taking place in schools and in communities, focused on challenging the root causes of gendered inequalities and VAWG through critically analysing use of power and identifying actions to balance power. In schools a participatory theatre approach (Tuseme) is used and in communities a there is a community mobilisation approach (SASA! Together). SASA! Together is a phased approach that works through stages of change with a whole community (moving through start, awareness, support, and action). With previous PPL funding the project launched the start phase (direct beneficiary funding). In this second phase the project is moving into the awareness phase.

TORCHES (Towards Resilient Communities with Health, Equality and Safety for all) Phase III
In this second phase the project is moving into the support phase.

TORCHES (Towards Resilient Communities with Health, Equality and Safety for all) Phase IV
This will be the 4th and final phase of the project. SASA! A behaviour change approach is being implemented with community wide sessions, women only sessions and drama groups. It is used to reduce VAWG, by challenging patriarchal beliefs and encouraging communities to become activists against SGBC and hold each other accountable. Phase 4 is the ‘Action Phase’ where activities, leaders and allies will lead efforts to support community members power to take action and sustain that change for years to come – solidifying new norms in which violence against women is never acceptable and women can live safe, fulfilling and dignified lives. The TORCHES project also has a disability inclusion aspect to it that is applied throughout.
